Let me preface this blog by stating that I am an Estudiantes de La Plata fan. Actually, when you have true passion for your team, it goes much further than just being a fan. Like I have mentioned before, an Estudiantes de La Plata flag was placed inside my crib the day I was born. The same flag now hangs on my desk at Goltv.

Memory makes the heart grow fonder to paraphrase the old saying, but it would be a mistake for US Soccer to forget the bad while basking in the glow of its first FIFA final appearance. Rejoice! Rejoice! And then get back to business. After the win against Spain in the semifinal round, I believed the US would keep it close against Brazil and lose 2-1. After watching Brazil struggle against South Africa and breaking down the matchups, I realized that the US had the opportunity to do much better. I actually thought they would win.

I would not be surprised if the United States beats Brazil in the Confederations Cup final today. It would not be easy, but after events from the past week, In fact, I believe the US will be the team lifting the trophy at the end.

Remember the Coca-Cola FIFA World Ranking? Yeah…the one ESPN soccer announcers mention before the kick-off of every USA match to “inform” the audience how well Team USA is performing against the rest of the World? Well, now FIFA has made up a new method to take money from a new sponsor and provide stat-loving fans something new to discuss. They have invented what they call the Castrol Index….

Spain 0, United States 2. The greatest result in the history of US soccer. Okay, it may have started as a bit of enthusiastic overstatement, but when you look at the record book, it just might be true. Let's look at the contenders in chronological order: United States 3-0 Belgium July 13, 1930 1930 World Cup - Group play, Round one

What will it take to beat Spain today at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein? It's not exactly game of their lives material, but it's close.

Following the emotional high following their victory over Egypt there is reason to celebrate, however the United States National Team could be on its way to a cold dose of reality against Spain. In a year full of Sundays, the US might need a leap year to come out on top. That does not mean it has to be a wasted outing though.
