It is general knowledge that the Brazilian soccer is top quaility, however, many of us don't understand the format of their tournament... or tournaments? I, and everyone else I know can't tell wether any Brazilian game golTV is showing is important or not, or what it means to win any of their many tournaments. Who goes to Copa Libertadores?

If GolTV is going to show Brazilian soccer, it would be useful to us if GolTV explained the format of the Brazilian league. Especially since you are transmitting the games in Spanish and not Portuguese because that tells me GolTV is betting on Brazil's league appeal to Non-Brazilians, and though many Brazilians may end up watching, the bulk of the audience is expected to be spanish speaking...

just a suggestion.

Hi UnoDelDim,
I read your inquiry and I decided to talk about Brazilian soccer to you. Even though am not from Brazil I am one of Brazil biggest fans. I think I can answer most questions regarding Brazilian soccer. Actually, I would like to talk to more fans about it because If we show more interest we will probably have a network like goltv bring more Brazilian soccer. At this time the games you are watching are the Sao Paulo state championship (Paulistao = Big Paulista). In May, the national league called Brasleirao will start. At this time all the states in Brazil are playing what they call state championships. Example the Paulistao (Sao Paulo State), Carioca (Rio De Janeiro State) Gauchao (Rio Grande do Sul), Pernanbucano (Pernambuco), etc. In April all the states will have their champions. Sao Paulo happens to be the most atractive because that city is where the best teams are. Teams in Brazil take price in being call state champions because of tradition. Those championships started at the beginning of the century while the Brazileirao started in the 1970's. Therefore, the state championships have a rich history. The Paulistao is made up of 20 teams. They play against each other once to make 19 games. The top 4 teams after 19 games will play a playoff to decide the champion. Some teams will also be relegated to the second level (Paulista B) and the top teams from the second division will move up to the Paulistao for next season. The other states have their own way of deciding a champion. Teams from different states and divions are also playing the Brazilian cup which is equivalent to Copa Del Rey in Spain for example. Besides the trophy as the Brazilian Cup champion, the winner qualifies for the Libertadores de America Cup. The Brazilian cup is like a playoff. Each teams is matched to another team and the series winner moves on to play the next series until the last 2 teams standing face each other in the final. The Brasileirao will start on May and If you are interested I will post about it next time. In my ranking the Brasileirao is one of the top 5 leagues in the world. Until next time.

YaYa: very funny!
Magin: Very helpful, actually!

So the main league is the Brasilerao. I imagine then that the top teams from each of the state championships are the ones that get to play the national league?

Also, you said the champion of the Brazilian Cup qualifies to copa Libertadores, but how are the other three chosen? and which ones get to skip the initial qualifier and go straight to the groups stage?

Thank you for your post! i found it very helpful. Can't wait for the Brasileirao to get started!
