Fergie backs Hernandez for big future

07-31-2010

Sir Alex Ferguson believes livewire striker Javier Hernandez is poised for a bright Old Trafford future after the Mexican star scored for his old club Chivas against his new employers.

Hernandez, nicknamed Chicharito (Little Pea), played the first half for his old Guadalajara club and scored after just eight minutes in Friday's friendly which the home side won 3-2.

Chris Smalling levelled but Adolfo Bautista re-established the lead for the hosts after 38 minutes and Hector Reynoso made it 3-1 just before the hour mark, before Nani pulled one back in the 79th minute.

'Chicharito was first class,' Ferguson told the official United website. 'His goal for Chivas was a marvellous strike. He showed his real qualities.

'Chivas played very well and they were very quick. They pressed the ball well and made things difficult for us. They deserved to win.'

After completing the first 45 minutes for the Mexican side, Hernandez changed teams and played for United until the hour mark.

The match in Mexico marked the end of United's North America tour with Ferguson's side now returning to England to prepare for next weekend's Community Shield against Chelsea at Wembley.

Ferguson added he was delighted with how 22-year-old Hernandez, who featured in Mexico's run to the last 16 at the World Cup, has settled into his new life with the English giants.

'Chicharito has done really well,' he said. 'The players have all said how good he is and what a great finisher he is - I think there are similarities between him and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

'The players are all supportive of him and have welcomed him to the club. I think he has a great future with us.'
